Sony announced recently that they are developing a combination CGI and Live Action “Sonic the Hedgehog” adaptation to film. What could go wrong?

According to the official statement, the film hopes to “capture Sonic’s irreverent tone and spirit, reuniting him with some of the most revered and infamous characters of the franchise.”

“There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog, and a built-in international fan base,” said Hannah Minghelle, Columbia Pictures’ president of Production, “we’re looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before.”

The franchise has been adapted into several different television series’, some better than others. Regardless, it is hard to tell if this movie will actually be good. It’s a movie based off a video game for children that blends live action and CGI. It could be good, but it doesn’t have much going for it at this time, but…

Maybe a good cast would help? Here’s a hypothetical casting for Sonic the Hedgehog, the live action/CGI film.

They’re gigantic! Really though, who knows. Who the hell knows if this is going to be any good? The older films are nostalgic gold, so it’ll be hard to re-invent the franchise in a way that keeps everyone happy.

Even worse, this isn’t something many adults would even remember doing.

Trailers and T.V. spots demonstrated a nice fun kids film, but nothing special; at least that was my impression. Many critics and movie-goers were bewildered when every single second of “The Lego Movie” turned out to be entertaining. The film received an early “Cerified Fresh” title on Rotten Tomatoes with a score higher than this years Oscar front-runners. (more…)
