When I was a child we lived pretty far away from the nearest Blockbuster. We had just bought the Nintendo 64, with the courtesy “Star Wars: Pod Racing” cartridge and were looking to dive into some more games. So we were roaming the modest selection of rental games at our local Food Fair.
Many Nintendo 64 owners dove into the milestone of 3D gaming with “Super Mario 64” or “The Legend of Zelda: The Ocarina of Time.” Well unfortunately, those games were always being rented every time we went to Food Fair. One day we decided that “Donkey Kong 64” looked pretty fun.
From the moment we powered up that cartridge, a whole new world of gaming possibilities were open to us. To this day people ask me why I loved “Donkey Kong 64” so much. It was a giant cluster of collectibles and repetitive gameplay. But to me, it will always be a nostalgic portal to the past. One of the best games of all time. (more…)
What a bizarre year for video games. Was the first year of the next generation a success? Well, it was different.
Nintendo probably has the greatest story here. Back in March we wrote about their struggling profits and what a world without Nintendo may look like after unveiling their new console – the Wii U. BBC news had reported that Nintendo executives took pay cuts, in the 20-30% range, including president President Satoru Iwata who took a 50% pay cut after disappointing sales of the Wii U.
All of these projections implied a bleak future for one of the eldest video game company. So it feels refreshing to make an easy case that the Wii U had the best exclusive titles of 2014.
On June 19, 2000, Microsoft announced that they had acquired Bungie Software and that Bungie would be part of the Microsoft Game Division under the name Bungie Studios. “Halo,” originally planned to be released solely for PC gaming, would become a Xbox exclusive. The greatest exclusive franchise to ever land on the Xbox consoles. Acquiring Bungie would be, financially, a strong decision for Microsoft. The sequel, “Halo 2,” also left a legacy on the video game industry, and made more than $125 million on its release day setting a record in the entertainment industry. “Halo 3” would break that record, earning $170 million on its opening day.
On October 1, 2007, Microsoft and Bungie announced that Bungie was splitting off from its parent and becoming a privately held limited liability company named Bungie LLC. Microsoft would retain a minority stake and continue to partner with Bungie on publishing and marketing both “Halo” and future projects, with the “Halo” intellectual property belonging to Microsoft.
Video Game Preview: What to Expect from E3 2014
June 10th is when E3 2014 will begin. We will hear about new technology, and most importantly new next-gen games. E3 2013 seemed to be all about the new consoles (and rightfully so), but a lot of the new games were glossed over. Many games announced last year have been delayed such as “The Witcher 3,” “The Division,” and “Halo 5: Guardians” game. So expect to hear more about all of these and less about distant future titles. Classic Video Game Analysis: The Legacy of Halo

November 15, 2001 was a milestone in Video Game history, it was the release of Halo: Combat Evolved. I wanted to talk less about the video games themselves and more about what makes them a “Legacy.” Personally, I probably would’ve never bought an Xbox back then if it wasn’t for Halo: Combat Evolved. The game was addicting and fun.
But let’s talk about legacy. What makes a legacy is how one artistic creation impacts the medium. Safe to say films like Gone with the Wind and Psycho were legacies for film and Star Trek would be one for television. The Halo franchise left a beautiful mark on Video Games and helped inspire some of the greatest video games today such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare.
