Analysis: Fargo’s True Story

mollyposter-fargo105Analysis: Fargo’s True Story

Is “Fargo” based on a true story? No, it is not.

“The Philosophy of the Coen Brothers” is a book that collects essays about Joel and Ethan Coens’ films and dives into their deeper meanings. In this book their is an essay titled “The Coens’ Tragic Western” by Richard Gilmore. The essay begins with a quote for Cormac McCarthy from his novel “No Country for Old Men”:

“The point is there ain’t no point.”

Here is a passage from the Essay:

“How true a story is allegorically may even be the measure of a philosophy or of a work of literature, in general. This is very much, it seems to me, the measure of the value of the movies of the Coen brothers. Nearly all of their movies tell stories that are unbelievable at the literal level. It is certainly true that they are stories, but it is also true that they are in their own ways true stories, stories that reveal true things about the way the world is and about our ways of being in the world. It is precisely in this way that their movies function like philosophy.” (more…)

Matt Bomer, The Normal Heart
Jim Parsons, The Normal Heart
Colin Hanks, Fargo
Alfred Molina, The Normal Heart
Martin Freeman, Sherlock: His Last Vow
Joe Mantello, The Normal Heart

Last Update: 07/12/14

Wow, “The Normal Heart” owned this category. Out of the four Matt Bomer has always been the strongest contender, and he is a very safe bet to win this category.

Emmys: Best Lead Actor – TV Movie or Mini-Series

esq-billy-xlgBest Lead Actor – TV Movie or Mini-Series

Billy Bob Thornton, Fargo
Mark Ruffalo, The Normal Heart
Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock: His Last Vow
Martin Freeman, Fargo
Idris Elba, Luther
Chiwetel Ejiofor, Dancing on the Edge

Last Update: 08/06/14

This is tough because “Fargo” will likely be picking up the Mini-Series award and “The Normal Heart” will pick up the TV Movie award. Here we have a match between Ruffalo and Thornton. “The Normal Heart” isn’t exactly “Behind the Candelabra,” and if “Fargo” can breakthrough in any other category it is this one.
