Oscars: 2013 Nominations – Winners and Losers
Oscars: 2013 Nominations – Winners and Losers
Whoa! What happened? So, myself and a lot of the more “professional” Oscar predictors did a pretty mediocre job on their predictions, especially in the Best Director category. But I thought the nominations were more thought provoking than previous years. It shows that the Academy is a group of wildcards really.
So here is the list of winners and losers after the nominations were announced per category: (more…)
Film Review: The Guilt Trip
Film Review: The Guilt Trip
Got invited to an early screening of this film, immediately proceeded by a live QnA with Rogen and Streisand themselves and it was a neat experience. I always love seeing free movies early, even when I don’t necessarily love the movie.
From the release of the trailer I thought the plot looked like it had its limits. The film looked like a one-trick pony. Mom is too motherly to a grown man on a cross-country road trip. Alright, can nearly two hours of that be consistently hilarious? (more…)
Awards: 2013 Golden Globe Predictions
Awards: 2013 Golden Globe Predictions
Not many bloggers out there predict the annual Golden Globes. So I thought I’d give it a try. However, this time I didn’t predict the television portion of the award nominations, but I assume it’ll be nearly the same as the Emmys.
One thing to remember when reading these is that they cannot be taken as a base to predict the Oscars. The HFPA has been infamous in nominating films just to get an audience to watch, you’ll see I predict The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey for drama below above a bunch more predictable candidates. I did this because having such a popular film nominated could draw them a TV audience.
Two years back they nominated the critically panned The Tourist just so they could have Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie at their ceremony. They shaped up last year, but when predicting them you still have to find a balance.
So, here they are:

So, I gave Beasts of the Southern Wild a little less love this time. I did this because it feels like the buzz is already dying down for it, I can only imagine of Oscar voters will even remember it at this rate. Still very possible, we’ll just have to wait and see as time goes on through Oscar season. If a lot of these potential award winners are really good, Beasts could fade into the early year background.
Gave Zero Dark Thirty a little more love. The trailer was alright, but the more I think about the films timeliness the more I am persuaded to go with it for award season.
Giving Argo more love because Ben Affleck hasn’t made a bad film yet, while a lot of these are still potentially not good. Argo is also a timely subject and the more times I see the trailer the better it looks. Also gave Cranston a spot because someone pointed out that an actor has always got a nomination from an Affleck film.
