The Media 10 doesn’t usually reviews movies, but we are changing that with “Quick Takes” a new segment that gives at most two paragraphs to recently seen movies.

Birdman (★★★1/2)

There are few movies as ambitious as “Birdman,” and under different direction the seamless, erratic, flow of the film may have proven more harm than good. Not only is “Birdman” one of the most beautiful movies of the year, it is also one of the most complex. With layered characters performed to a tee by talented actors.

The Homesman (★★)

With “The Homesman,” writer/director Tommy Lee Jones has cemented the fact that his talents are just as effective on-screen as they are off-screen. Unfortunately, the result of this very faithful adaptation feels unfocused with a paint-by-numbers structure. Some scenes pack an emotional punch, while others feel flat and unimportant.

Guardians of the Galaxy (★★1/2)

By not taking itself too seriously, “Guardians of the Galaxy” easily becomes one of Marvel’s most well-written stories post-“Iron Man.” Not to mention some of the best art direction in a film this year, both visually and practically. However, “Guardians” commits the superhero movie sins of keeping long-winded action scenes too close to one another and having an uninteresting villain.

Hypothetical Casting: Sonic the Hedgehog

Sony announced recently that they are developing a combination CGI and Live Action “Sonic the Hedgehog” adaptation to film. What could go wrong?

According to the official statement, the film hopes to “capture Sonic’s irreverent tone and spirit, reuniting him with some of the most revered and infamous characters of the franchise.”

“There are limitless stories to tell with a character like Sonic the Hedgehog, and a built-in international fan base,” said Hannah Minghelle, Columbia Pictures’ president of Production, “we’re looking to capture everything that generations of fans know and love about Sonic while also growing his audience wider than ever before.”

The franchise has been adapted into several different television series’, some better than others. Regardless, it is hard to tell if this movie will actually be good. It’s a movie based off a video game for children that blends live action and CGI. It could be good, but it doesn’t have much going for it at this time, but…

Maybe a good cast would help? Here’s a hypothetical casting for Sonic the Hedgehog, the live action/CGI film.

Status: It wasn’t until the trailer was announced that anyone thought this film was going to even be done this year. Writer/Director Spike Jonze (who is notorious for spending long hours in an edit room) has made a film with a bizarre premise, the trailer looks like the film has a lot to say and it will now close the New York Film Festival with a push from executives who are confident in the quality of the film and its award chances.
