When someone says “Nicktoons” what’s the first thing that comes to your mind?
SpongeBob. Rugrats. Rocko’s Modern Life. Doug. Hey Arnold!
Early on there were so many great shows produced by Nickelodeon that still deeply resonates with young adults like myself.
As an adult it’s hard not to still fall in love with all these shows:
SpongeBob, early on, is pitch perfect comedy and one of the funniest shows of all time.
Rugrats was one of the most imaginative cartoons ever made.
Hey Arnold!, one of the most human and down-to-earth cartoons ever made.
Some shows we remember, but maybe not as prominently were also excellent: CatDog, Rocket Power, Fairly Odd Parents (early on), As Told by Ginger, there were just so many.
2 of my favorite Nicktoons were short-lived: Invader Zim and Danny Phantom.
Over a decade later they are constantly acknowledged, whether it’s merchandise for Invader Zim or fan-fiction/renewal campaigns for Danny Phantom.
While there is no solid evidence on “why” the cancelation for these shows occurred the rumors point to the divided/aggressive fanbase for Danny Phantom and the adult-themes of Invader Zim.
Both shows did better with teenage audience than audiences under the age of 13.
They were both also considered expensive to animate. Shows like SpongeBob and Fairly Odd Parents made bank with a fraction of the budget.
If either of these cartoons were to come back – great! If Nickelodeon had held onto them (Danny Phantom only had 49 episodes, Invader Zim had 66) they both could’ve been considered among the greats.
