Here are my personal top 10 favorite TV shows that aired in 2017:
Some quick honorable mentions:
Atypical – Season 1
This is one of the funnier new shows I saw in 2017. It has a strong heart without being overly sentimental. It’s funny, it’s endearing, and at times can feel all too real.
You’re the Worst – Season 4
This is one of my favorite modern comedies, but unfortunately season 4 was undoubtedly the weakest season. There are still some strong poignant moments that tackle the mental illnesses of the characters. I will always love watching these characters figure themselves out and compete with there neuroses.
Godless – Limited Series
They don’t make any great westerns anymore you say? Watch Godless on Netflix. If you’re a fan of the genre you will be deeply satisfied.
American Vandal – Season 1
Consistently hysterical, American Vandal is as absurd as its premise seems and more. The gimmick does exhaust itself, but as soon as it does there are more subplots and tangents that deliver just as much laughs.
13 Reasons Why – Season 1
It will unfortunately will be remember for its inappropriate controversies. 13 Reasons Why is an emotional mystery that keeps you on the edge of your seat and then destroys you with an emotionally complex conclusion. It does a great job subverting what you think you know about adolescent suicide.
Here’s the Top 10:
10. Master of None – Season 2
The Thanksgiving episode may be one of the most well-written episodes in 2017. Ansari adds more depth to his series with more commentary on the economic and societal pressures of young adults in today’s world.
9. GLOW – Season 1
GLOW is such a delight. It’s consistently funny without sacrificing the authenticity of its cast. To balance that kind of authenticity with such an absurd concept is impressive, and the cast delivers hard.
8. The End of the F***king World – Season 1
Like it’s characters, the show has no problem holding up a big middle finger to our world. It’s apathetic, but with the lingering charm of a coming-of-age love story.
7. Rick and Morty – Season 3
The weakest season still delivers consistent laughs. The bear minimum for this show is consistent comedy, but with added layers of social and political commentary it exceeds those expectations. Harmon/Roiland continue to challenge their audience with new, and sometimes unimaginably deep, scenarios.
6. Mindhunter – Season 1
You mix an interesting true story with engaging writing and directing and you have Mindhunter. Now show this year played tension the way this show did. I was on the edge of my seat for most of the series with my anxiety heightened.
5. The Handmaid’s Tale – Season 1
Okay. It took one slot to get a show that competes with the tension of Mindhunter. The Handmaid’s Tale is an amalgam of our greatest fears in a socially conscious world.
4. The Crown – Season 2
The Crown is textbook on how to make a biographical epic. Even some of the more mundane plots become bombastic with the show’s gorgeous cinematography and score. It’s the best kind of history lesson.
3. The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel – Season 1
Palladino can now take the torch from Woody Allen when it comes to rapid, complex dialogue and wit. This show is so charmingly funny and consistent, while the plot points feel all too real.
2. BoJack Horseman – Season 4
I know some people haven’t fallen for this animated series about a horse, but I fell, and I fell hard in season 4. BoJack, and his friend’s train wreck of a life is all too familiar and expressed empathetically. Season 4 also adds much more depth to their animation and production. It also contains one of my favorite episodes of any TV show of all-time. You know which one.
1. The Leftovers – Season 3
This may be one of the greatest seasons of any television show ever. I describe this show to people as an emotional experience. You just feel throughout this season. You feel for the characters, you feel for the situations, you feel their complications and their devastations. It’s ending is thought-provoking and the storylines are consistently challenging. It’s a beautiful experience like no other.
