Oscar: 2015 Oscar Predictions – Post Cannes
Now that two of the most important film festivals have completed it’s time for us to examine which films are looking strong for the Oscar season.
We have fully updated all of our predictions, click on the Oscar tab to see all predicted nominees, alternates, and dark horses.
What did we learn from Cannes? It may not have taken home the Palme, but “Foxcatcher” now looks like our front-runner for many Oscars. The films stands at an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, so even though it is topping most of our lists it seems highly unlikely that it will be a major winner at the end of 2014.
Many festival attendees said that “Foxcatcher” was divisive, yielding comparisons to “The Master” which had a solid critical reception to most, but not everyone took the bait. Taking the “Best Director” prize at Cannes also puts Bennett Miller in a better spot than any other potential.
You can never count our a Palme winner, even if it is a foreign film. “Winter Sleep” could also show up outside the “Foreign Film” category and contend in Screenplay, Director, or even Picture. It’s hard to picture it’ll have the same success as the 2012 Palme Winner “Amour,” but we shouldn’t count it out.
“Mr. Turner” could also be big. Timothy Spall easily won the Cannes “Best Actor” award and the film currently holds a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes with 17 reviews. It could also likely storm the technical categories, such as Costumes, Makeup, Cinematography, and Production Design.
Along with Spall, we shouldn’t count out Julianne Moore, even with the poor reviews “Map to the Stars” has been receiving. The “Best Actress” category doesn’t look too strong this year, so it’s likely, with enough advertisement, that Moore could land in that category. It’s unlikely, but for now she’s there.
