If Sunshine on Leith gets a US release date, would I be stupid to predict Sunshine on Leith getting nominated? (Mamma Mia got nominated afterall and Sunshine on Leith has exactly the same format but)
The only difference is that SOL is based around music from The Proclaimers as opposed to ABBA
It is pretty giant wall to climb if it wants to be as popular as “Mamma Mia.” MM had an A-list cast to help sell it, I doubt SOL will be nearly as profitable. Also early critic reviews seem pretty mixed. A less popular film could get in, but it would need that extra support from critics and it’s production company.
On the other hand there is evidence that the Globes have a hard on for musicals for a very long time. Most of the previous winners have been musicals and almost every year a musical gets nominated.
Famous musical winners include but not limited to Les Miserables, Fiddler on the Roof, My Fair Lady, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, The King and I, Moulin Rouge!, Chicago, The Lion King, Beauty & the Beast, Oliver!, Dreamgirls, The Music Man and Walk the Line.
Based on the musicals that have already got a US release date, I think Sunshine on Leith, if that gets a US release date, is potentially the big gun of 2014 in the same way that My Fair Lady was the big gun of 1964 (Mary Poppins was nominated but it was never a real threat to My Fair Lady.)
I think in addition to the release date that “Sunshine on Leith” has quite a marketing ladder to climb before it truly enters the race. Also going for it though is that this is the Hollywood “Foreign” Press we’re talking about, so if it gets a late release date, and much better reviews than what it has already got, it may get a nomination. Seriously doubt much more than that though.
So far it has a 92% rating on RottenTomatoes.com which is considered fresh as opposed to rotten.
Not all Golden Globe winners have had A-List casts. Case in point, the first Hangover. Back then the Hangover boys were unknowns. Ed Helms was only known then as Andy from The Office yet the film beat out 2 Meryl Streep vehicles and a musical featuring Nicole Kidman, Penelope Cruz and Judi Dench (all of whom were arguably more A-List than Helms back then)
